Homework

Philosophy of Homework at Furzefield Primary School

At Furzefield, we believe that working at home helps to develop a child’s self-discipline and a self-motivating attitude towards study. We further believe that a purposeful homework study programme helps to emphasise the partnership of home and school, working together to benefit the child.

Guidance

We ensure that homework tasks are purposeful, matched to the needs and ability of individual children, and that they are an extension of classroom activities, extending knowledge or reinforcing skills.

A homework diary/reading diary will be provided. This also acts as a communication link with home.

At the beginning of each year children are welcomed into their new class and parents are informed, by letter, of the expectations relating to that particular year group. Information relating to types of homework, time expected and subjects is noted in termly curriculum leaflets.

Types of Homework

All children across the school are expected to read on a daily basis. This may include reading to an experienced reader, listening to and discussing texts, using Reading Eggs (readingeggs.co.uk) and independent reading for more proficient readers.  We recommend a minimum of 10-15 minutes.

Additional English tasks may include: spellings, sounds, writing and comprehension.

Additional Mathematics tasks may include: Mighty Multiples and Mathletics (uk.mathletics.com)/ Mathseeds (mathseeds.co.uk).

Progression in the total time spent on all homework will occur through the school, in preparation for secondary school. These are our guidelines:

  • Years 1 and 2:approximately 1.0 hour per week
  • Years 3 and 4: approximately 1.5 hours per week
  • Years 5 and 6: approximately 2.5 hours per week

Homework Club

Over the last five years, Mrs Newbury and Mrs Evans have successfully been running Homework Club, with the support of Mrs Grogan and Mrs Dunn.

The ethos of the club is to encourage and support the children to independently complete their English and Maths homework, set by their teachers. On completion of their homework, they also have an opportunity to go onto Reading Eggs or Mathletics.

This service is free and each year group is allocated a specific day of the week:

Time: 3.10pm – 5.00pm
Year Group: 6
