Sport at Furzefield

We aim to encourage a love of sport and PE through providing structured opportunities for children to develop the skills at their own level. In each phase we maintain to present a weekly award called ‘the sports champion award’. This recognises a range of sporting traits from commitment, progress, ability and effort, to team work, passion and stamina. Our dedicated PE and sports teacher, Mrs Turner, has embedded the new curriculum throughout the whole school which has developed opportunities in inter and intra school competitions.

The year 5 + 6 Sports Crew help deliver sporting opportunities to children on the playground, and the introduction of Sports Crew has led to children successfully undertaking Surrey Sports Leadership training in years 2, 3 & 4.

The school offers a huge variety of sporting clubs (football, cross country, dance, gymnastics, netball, cheerleading, etc. – see Clubs page for a full list on offer) and takes part in many inter school competitions throughout the year (i.e. football league & tournaments, district cross country meets, Harlequin dance competition, netball league & tournaments, as well as gymnastics, orienteering and tennis competitions!).

We have invested in an all-weather running track which is used by all year groups and encourages children to access the ‘mile a day’ scheme, and the Multi Use Games Arena is installed and in use in the KS2 playground!  In addition, we were fortunate enough to have some outdoor gym equipment installed in the KS2 playground, using some of our Sports Premium funding.

Playing sports gives our children a chance to build life skills such as resilience, and helps develop positive attitudes towards exercising and competing. Children participating in sporting clubs can also receive stamps towards their Children’s University passports.

We are proud to say that last two academic years we have achieved the Gold School Games Mark Award and we are also working with Crawley Town FC for the second year running as part of the Premier League Primary Stars initiative (see press releases below).
